Edinburgh

About This Location

Edinburgh has a long and rich history of architecture, dating back to the Medieval period. Some of the city’s most iconic buildings were constructed during this time, including Edinburgh Castle and St Giles’ Cathedral. In the centuries that followed, Edinburgh emerged as one of the leading centres of the Scottish Enlightenment. Edinburgh’s architecture also evolved in step with several notable architects working in the city, including Robert Adam and William Chambers who’s work reflected the changing political and social landscape. The grand residences of the Scottish nobility gave way to stylish townhouses and Georgian terraces, while Gothic Revival churches became a feature of the cityscape.

Today, Edinburgh’s architectural heritage is still evident in the city’s streetscape, and many of its historic buildings now serve as inspiration for modern architects. With many of Edinburgh’s historic buildings having been carefully restored, they now house modern businesses and apartments, however, their influence can still be seen in the work of contemporary architects, who often draw on Edinburgh’s rich architectural heritage for inspiration.

At HOKO design, we are proud to be one of these firms, and our team has worked on a number of projects in Edinburgh that have been inspired by the city’s architectural legacy. As a Scottish architectural firm, our focus on residential architecture has presented us with the opportunity to work with amazing projects, both considered architectural renovations and exciting new-builds.

Meet the Team

Amy

Lead Technician

Hey! My name is Amy and I live with my partner and 2 dogs. I started my Architectural Technology career at Edinburgh Napier University and ultimately graduated in 2020. I joined HOKO soon after graduation and have continued to grow and learn with such an exciting and passionate team! I am currently a Lead Architectural Technologist, CPD coordinator and the lunchtime fun organiser. My day to day outset is Revit, Enscape, Planning, Building Warrants and supporting my team every step of the way. My favourite projects I have worked on have been the ones where, working together, the project comes together to present the client with the home of their dreams and more. Our projects aren’t just ‘work’ these are homes that our clients will grow, have memories and fall in love with!

Sarah-Jayne

Lead Interior Designer

I’m Sarah-Jayne, the Lead Interior Designer here at HOKO shop. When designing interiors for clients homes, the most important elements that influence design for me is functionality in conjunction with the client’s taste and needs. My vision for HOKO Shop, which have evolved and developed over my time so far, has been create an accessible and easy approach to Interior Design for all our clients. We’ve been working on ways to help our clients visualise how their space could look at the end of the process. This is intended to help to create a smooth journey from start to finish and ensure you’re not left with an empty white box when the build has been completed. After all the interior of your home is more than just objects but is what gives your home its character and charm, making the space your own.

Ross

I’m Ross, an Architectural Technologist originally from the Black Isle, now living in Glasgow. I graduated with a bachelors degree with honours in Architectural Technology from the Robert Gordon University in 2020 and started with HOKO a year later in 2021. I was drawn to HOKO by the company’s use, and focus on, technology, as this is a big passion of mine and since starting here, I have loved how forward thinking technology is built into our design process, from the initial concept design to building warrant. This is all amplified by the amazing HOKO team, who put so much detail into everything we do.

Jonny

I joined HOKO in 2020, coming from a multi-disciplinary company where I engaged in projects ranging in value from £100k to £10m. My role at HOKO continues from my extensive experience in the home improvement sector where I apprenticed before university, relighting my fire for residential architecture as I enjoy being hands-on with both the project and my clients. I work as a Lead Architectural Technologist at HOKO based in the Glasgow office but working across the entire UK, managing projects from the detailed design stage onwards. I have had relevant exposure to sustainable design in my career, so I look to implement these measures where appropriate and am now a member of our sustainability team at HOKO.

Jack

My role within HOKO is an Architectural Technologist, joining the team in October 2021. I am based in Glasgow and have experience working on projects across the UK. My experience working is all based within the residential sector as I like the idea of a more personal and hands on experience helping clients achieve their desired homes. During my time studying I developed a strong passion for sustainability within construction, looking to implement this into my work I joined HOKO’s sustainable research and development team.

Graham

Lead Technologist

Hi I’m Graham, I’m based in the main office in Glasgow. I started working for HOKO in April 2021 & I am one of the Lead Technologists. I appreciate most styles of architecture & love traveling, seeing how different cultures & climates have shaped local styles. I have a HND in Architectural Technology & the built Environment & went on to get my BSc in Architectural Studies at Strathclyde University. I have worked in the construction industry since 2010 in a variety of different roles from Cladding manufacturers to Structural engineers. I worked for a couple of years in the south of England on large scale luxury housing projects & end of life care homes specialising in dementia care. My favourite project at HOKO so far has been an extension incorporating structural glass as this is a construction material that I have never worked with before. It was interesting learning the limits of the materials & the relevant details needed to make it a successful design.

Connor

Architectural Technologist

I joined Hoko in August of 2021 after gaining my BA in Architecture from Dundee University, I am currently completing my first year out in hopes of returning to the university to finish my master’s degree. I work in Hoko’s Glasgow office as an Architectural Technologist taking part in a range of domestic projects across the country. I particularly enjoy Hoko’s use of VR technology and modern computer software to create realistic visualizations. It allows me to produce a detailed model that can create an accurate spatial experience for our clients giving them a firsthand impression of their future homes. I believe that the skills and experience gained here will last a lifetime and help me on my journey to becoming a fully qualified Architect. In my spare time I enjoy playing rugby, going out for food, and listening to jazz.

Catherine

Architectural Designer

I am one of HOKO’s architectural designers, joining the team in April 2021. I grew up on the North coast of Ireland, moving to Glasgow for university which has become home from home! After having studied at the Mackintosh School of Architecture and worked on a range of conservation and new build projects at varying scales throughout Europe, I have developed a keen interest in sustainable design and ways in which we can retain existing structures to enrich future designs. I believe that collaboration is one of the most exciting aspects of architecture and working together throughout the design process can help form unique and inspiring spaces in your home.

Cameron

Project Architect

After graduating from the Mackintosh School of Architecture, I worked at a practice specialising in sustainability on international healthcare projects before focussing my skillset on high-end domestic builds closer to home. I have always been inspired by new frontiers in architecture, sustainable buildings and considered design. I enjoy creating spaces with longevity, narrative and purpose through considered detailing and appropriate use of materials. I focus on maintaining great relationships with clients, consultants, contractors, and planners to ensure a seamless client experience from beginning to end. Outside of the office, I spend my weekends travelling from my home in Glasgow to the outer reaches of Scotland as an avid shinty player.
